Intended Impact

This company began as an open innovation research project at a leading Swedish University. The aim of the project was to conduct research into improving the societal and environmental impact of modern cars. Our findings revealed numerous challenges in the current mobility industry. Chiefly, vehicles today are oversized, often using as much as 93% of their fuel for purposes other than transporting occupants. Additionally, the user experience has developed slowly; it is still heavily influenced by design choices made decades ago, when vehicles were significantly different.

Following the study, the project expanded and developed into a highly innovative firm, with a particular focus on the efficient and effective application of modern technologies. Our vehicle is designed to achieve seamless human interaction, like that of modern flagship smartphones, and by using careful design and optimised manufacturing processes the carbon footprint of the vehicle is dramatically reduced.

Monetisation

Initially, we will focus on direct sales to private individuals through our own website and through consumer electronics settings. At our launch event scheduled for later this year, we will announce a major partnership that will gain our vehicle exposure of 5.5 million people per day, in sales settings Europe-wide (this agreement is currently under an NDA).

We have received a high volume of inbound requests from distributers in markets such as the Middle East (see attached Image 14) and Israel (see attached Image 15), who are keen to be our distributors. Several fleet managers and other corporate customers around the world have requested volume orders for Uniti, validating B2B demand for our vehicle.

Once we have a critical mass of vehicles on the road and we have gathered sufficient data to reliably enable autonomy features, we can extend our business model to offer mobility as a service. In this phase, both fleet managers and private persons will be able to opt into this 'car on demand' service, which will include remote human monitoring of vehicles during delivery.

Target Market

Uniti is designed as an ideal second family car or a daily commuter vehicle for medium to high-income urban millennials. Sweden, Germany, the UK and France alone have more than 30 million young adults in this segment, yet this number can be greatly expanded to include tech savvy individuals of any age.

The segment can be characterized as progressive in many aspects of social and secular life. Many of this target group shows little interest in traditional cars. They are part of the trend of conscious consumption and are media-hungry technophiles. Uniti is designed to be perfect for young professionals or young families wanting a lower cost vehicle, a low environmental impact, and with an enhanced user experience.

Shortly after the first deliveries are made in Europe, we will start producing vehicles in Australia with a focus on the local market and exports to Asia. market in Western European countries. Here, this segment saw almost 14 million new registrations in 2016 alone.

Marketing Strategy

Tesla achieved US$10bil worth of orders for their model 3 within days of its launch – all without spending any money on advertising. This shows the power of a compelling and provocative story.

In only our first year, we gained massive media attention including over a thousand online/offline articles, plus global TV and radio coverage (Same reference as in the accomplishments segment above). This demonstrates the universal appeal of our product and our story which has already gained a global potential media reach of 2.6 billion people (Meltwater PR Monitor see above). Growing our reach is a key part of our strategy as well as engaging mainstream audiences on an emotional level as they follow our journey from prototype to mass production and first deliveries.

We continue to produce regular content and keep our audience engaged and growing, with the intention of converting this into value, such as sales and brand ambassadors. We execute this strategy with the support of professionals, to scale and grow our digital presence in a systematic manner.

Competition Strategy

Our research shows that our target group of millennials and liberal technophiles of all ages show little interest in traditional cars. By focusing on those features that are more relevant to this segment (such as simpler interfaces, a customisable steer-by-wire system, gaming capability and more suitable business models) instead of traditional metrics, Uniti is not designed to compete with a Tesla, a BMW i3 or a Nissan Leaf. Instead, Uniti seeks to accelerate a new market.

Physical comparisons to any competing vehicles is somewhat limited, as Uniti could represent the beginning of a very different technology platform for personal urban mobility. That being said, the most relevant competitors on the market today are the Renault Twizy and ZOE, which are the highest selling electric cars in Europe. In fact, our analytics show that the growth of the EV market, inspired by Tesla, is only limited by the narrow range of vehicles on offer - making Uniti a distinctly viable product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Uniti doing crowdfunding?

We want to give the public, both potential future customers but also sophisticated individual investors, the opportunity to become part of our journey as it is part of our DNA. We have always been an open company that relies on a constant exchange of opinion with the public as we design and build a product for the masses. We therefore find it only fair to include these people at an early stage but will certainly move towards institutional investors later. We have been and will continue to be in very close contact with a number of institutional investors, both national and international ones, who have shown great interest in our company and will become important partners during our next funding rounds.

1. Company

How did Uniti come about?

Uniti began as an open innovation research project at Lund University. The aim of the project was to conduct research into improving the societal and environmental impact of modern cars. We found that vehicles today are most often used by a single individual driving short distances. With this in mind we set out to design a vehicle to fit modern needs.

Our aim is to develop innovative electric vehicles that make sense and are attractive to the mass market, for the betterment of society. The Uniti car is designed to achieve seamless human interaction, like that of modern flagship smartphones. By using careful design and optimised manufacturing processes the carbon footprint of our vehicle will be dramatically reduced compared to current alternatives.

Who is in #teamuniti?

We have 45 team members in total including interns. We have a very international team with staff from various countries such as Australia, Singapore, France, Germany, El Salvador and Sweden. The background of #teamuniti is very diverse as well, with experience in various fields including Engineering, Nanoscience, Cognitive science, Business Administration, Advertising, Economics, and Animation & Special Effects. We are a group made up of talented individuals with strong industry backgrounds as well as new graduates.

Are you looking to fill any positions now?

Uniti is always looking for the next talent to add to our team. You can find several open positions via our webpage at https://career.unitisweden.com or email Gabriella Nylén, our Team Relations Director, gabriella@teamuniti.com.

What partnerships has Uniti secured?

Our key partners have joined us early and we have signed long- term agreements to ensure we reduce risk in key areas well ahead of time. A primary example is our foundation partnership with Siemens. This partnership will enable us to move from vehicle engineering to factory planning, mass manufacture and beyond. We also have partnerships in place for mass scale distribution, vehicle development, service networks and the like, and we plan to announce these at our launch event later this year.

What is the governmental or legislative support for Uniti and the EV industry?

We have received grants totaling over 400 000 SEK from Energimyndigheten (Sweden’s energy agency) for IP purposes and to apply for EU grants. Uniti has also received a grant to take part in an autonomy research partnership with Volvo and other companies. We are in the process of a joint application with VTI (Sweden’s National Road and Transport Institute) to develop our heads-up display.

The Vice Prime Minister of Sweden, Isabella Lövin, visited Uniti earlier this year and we discussed, among other things, what kind of regulations Uniti is in need of. Recently, certification was announced making it legal to test autonomous vehicles on Swedish roads. An incentive programme was also launched to promote the adoption of more sustainable vehicles. Both these initiatives are highly beneficial for Uniti and the EV industry.

What media coverage have you garnered to date?

Uniti has been featured in 1691 online and offline articles, coupled with appearances in global TV & Radio. The total potential media reach of Uniti to date is 2.6 billion people (Meltwater PR Monitor statistic). Growing our reach is a key part of our strategy as well as engaging mainstream audiences on an emotional level as they follow our journey from prototype to mass production and first deliveries.

2. Car

When will the Uniti vehicle be ready?

We are aiming to have mass production up and running during 2019. The car will be available soon after. Official pre-orders with refundable deposit will be open at our launch ceremony scheduled for late 2017. Until then, you can reserve your place in the queue at uniti.earth/pre-order.

What range will Uniti have?

Uniti includes a standard range of 300km.

What is the price of the Uniti vehicle?

The flagship model of the Uniti vehicle will be sold at a target price of 199 000 SEK before rebates. There will also be lower cost models.

How is safety ensured in the Uniti vehicle?

We include all of the standard safety features, combined in a robust carbon fibre body and by leveraging emerging technologies in the field of computer vision, deep learning, and vehicle autonomy, we place a strong focus on crash avoidance as well.

Is there really no steering wheel in the Uniti vehicle?

Our electronic steer-by-wire system means we can design for the driver and not for the car, increasing safety, handling, and fun! However, for those unwilling to let go of the traditional steering wheel, this option will be available.

I’m worried about running out of battery on the road or where there is no charging infrastructure. How does Uniti adress this problem?

Even though steadily growing, the charging infrastructure isn’t really mature everywhere yet. Therefore Uniti is developing solutions to eliminate charging station dependency problems such as a removable and rechargeable auxiliary battery pack and roof solar panels for trickle charging.

What is Uniti’s competitive strategy?

Our research shows that our target group of urban millennials and technophiles of all ages show little interest in traditional cars. Instead, Uniti seeks to accelerate a new market for lightweight electric vehicles.

Physical comparisons to any competing vehicles is somewhat limited, as Uniti could represent the beginning of a very different technology platform for personal urban mobility. That being said, our most relevant competitors on the market today are all compact cars. Our analytics show that the growth of the EV market, inspired by Tesla, is only limited by the narrow range of vehicles on offer - making Uniti a distinctly viable product.

3. Production/Sales

Will the Uniti vehicle be built in Sweden?

Yes! Uniti has its roots in Sweden. We are currently looking at different options for a factory site around Skåne. This location will service European markets, and we are in discussions for other factory locations in various other markets.
